In the village of Banuta in Prekmurje this November, we set up the first aquaponic garden for the commercial cultivation of fish and vegetables.

In aquaponics, we grow fish and vegetables in coexistence, without the use of soil, fertilizers, pesticides and chemicals. An aquaponic garden can be located in the yard, in the middle of the city or even in empty commercial premises. It is also suitable for well-visited city locations, dilapidated parking lots or empty unused spaces between residential buildings. The model can be set up as an energy-independent object, the water in the system circulates continuously, the water that blows out or is consumed by vegetables is replaced with rainwater.

In an aquaponic garden, vegetables are grown in vertical towers, in which more than ten times more crops per square meter can be produced than in the traditional way of growing food.

Aquaponics supports the ecological cycle, as the fish provide the necessary fertilizers for vegetables through their excrement.

Advantages of aquaponic food production::

• Smaller and enclosed spaces: Much less physical space is required compared to growing food in the ground. Indoor cultivation is also an option.
• Less water consumption: up to 95 percent less water is used in an aquaponic system.
• Faster Growth: Food grows much faster in an aquaponic system than in soil.
• Organic food: food without chemicals and pesticides,
• Vegetables are fresh, healthy and taste better.
• The fish are raised in conditions that are ideal for each type of fish and therefore the meat is of the highest quality

The natural way of processing vegetables is gaining importance, mainly due to the excessive use of imported fruits and vegetables, which contain a lot of pesticides and other chemicals. In aquaponics, fish is an additional product.

Climate change is already felt all over the world, and according to forecasts, the effects of the changes are expected to become even more frequent and intense in the coming decades. It is necessary to adapt food production in the future to these changes.

Aquaponics production offers conditions for high-quality and natural food production with the inclusion of innovative technologies and, as a result, strengthening the economic position of farms in Slovenia.

Aquaponics brings many benefits to residents:

• Production and greater availability of organic vegetables and fruits with high added value;
• Independence from weather conditions in cultivation;
• Sustainable food production and increasing self-sufficiency;
• Protection and sustainable management of natural resources, mitigation and adaptation to climate change and preservation of biodiversity;

• Long-term improvement of dietary habits in the community and thus lower risk of disease.
• Development of new jobs and employment of the vulnerable

We want to spread the aquaponic food production model in Slovenia and beyond.

We plan to cooperate with schools and institutes in the production of aquaponic vegetables and fish farming. In addition, we want to cooperate with research institutes and universities in the field of aquaponics research. food production.
